Objective: To analyze the role of whistleblowers in exposing corruption and irregularities in European Union (EU) countries and assess the implementation of the EU Directive 2019/1937 aimed at protecting them.
Method: Drawing on a report by Transparency International, the video examines the adherence of EU member countries to the directive's requirements, particularly regarding whistleblowers' rights to reporting, access to legal resources, compensation, and counseling.
Results: It was found that 19 out of 20 evaluated countries do not fully comply with the directive's requirements, with significant restrictions noted in countries like Italy and Portugal, and similar gaps in Lithuania and Slovakia. The implementation of protective measures varies significantly, with some countries making progress and others still facing challenges.
Practical Implications: The video emphasizes the importance of aligning with best practices, such as anonymous reporting and internal reporting systems, and support for whistleblowers. Positive examples include France and Spain, while challenges remain in countries like Germany and Latvia.
Conclusions: Legislative changes are proposed to encourage more effective practices and highlight the importance of securing whistleblowers' rights and improving support and guarantees offered to them.
